I just destroyed my 350/260hp gm crate motor. But I have a 383 blueprint on its way now. However, since the engine is seized, I cannot remove the bolts from the flexplate and the torque converter. So, they must now come out together, and I had wanted to rebuild the transmission anyway. But I'm trying to find out if I must disconnect the driveshaft before I attempt this. I will have 2 other people helping me, so I thought it might be possible to simple slide the spline out of the transmission as I hoisted it out. Anyone have any ideas on whether this is possible/easier?

Remove driveshaft, pull eng & trans together, remove bellhousing bolts once everything is on the ground and have your buddies slide the trans off the converter. Then you can get to the tc bolts. I'd leave tension on the hoist as a precaution so the engine doesn't roll while you separate it.

when i pull the old v6 and trans out of my cutty thats how i did it just let the drive shaft side out on it way up. but as it was almost out started makein a big mess with transmission fluid and when i when to put the new motor in trans in i had to unboult the drive shaft anyways to get it back in the new trans. if i was u id take the drive shaft out b4 u move the motor and go to a auto parts store and get a cap for the end of ur trans so ull have no mess form it. and no tool is needed ones u unboult the drive shaft form the rearend it should just slide out of the trans mit have to give it a good pull

 Probably took longer to type the question than the 45 seconds you would "save" by not unbolting the driveline. No special tools required.

Try not to lose the u-joint caps when you pull it....unless you like playing with greasy needle bearings!

You might also consider draining the trans before pulling the driveshaft. Unless you have an old drive shaft yolk or plastic plug to plug the end of the trans.
