okay this is my first chevy. i plan on pulling the engine cuz i noticed oil coming between the trans and block. so im just gonna pull it to replace the rear seal and trans front pump seal and gasket. so is it easier to separate the block and trans and pull them that way or just pull them together. im asking cuz on my mustang i have to separate them to pull em out cuz of the size of the transmission hull. but it looks like there is more than enough room to pull and install them together. its an 86 cutlass.

i prefer the easy way. id rather disconnect them out of the car. gives me more room to see what im doin. i guess im gonna try to pull them together.

I've always pulled mine separately, but I don't have anything to tilt the combo either.

If it were me, I'd leave the engine in and just drop the transmission. If your drive line is original or has been in for a while you may be opening a can of worms pulling both. IE: snapping exhaust bolts etc.

everything is either getting replaced or upgraded so im not worried about exhaust. i want to change out the front pump oring and gasket on the trans and the rear seal, put a shift kit in while im at it. and the engine is gonna get a new oil pump and hci are all getting replaced. rear end is getting rebuilt and drive shaft im gonna put on some new u joints. this car was my friends and before that his brothers and neither of them new how to work on cars and really didnt care about maintenance. luckily a couple years back they had a friend put in a rebuilt trans and engine. so both are good but there are some minor oil leaks from the pan so i figure why not just pull it and replace all gaskets so i dont have to worry about it later.

i got one of those engine tilters i picked it up a couple years back but still havent used it. good thing ill probably need it now

If your gonna pull the motor, you might as well re-seal it or maybe even rebuild it. If the rear main is leaking, you either have a groove in the crank or blow-by. Also change your PCV Valve. A bad valve will cause seals to leak because crank case pressure's have no where to go...

well when i got it the pcv system wasnt even connected. the engine had 140 to 150psi on compression test. cold on a dry test and had real good oil psi at idle. and when u would rev it up to like 2 or 3k the oil psi would jump to almost 60. so with that i assumed the bearings are good and the rings are sealing up right. so im leaving the bottom end alone. but it needs a new oil pan gasket which might be causing the leak between block and trans. so im gonna change rear main seal anyway since im pulling it and also put in a hv oil pump and a pickup tube since im gonna have it out. dont worry since im pullin it im gonna take off the main caps and rods to inspect and measure the bearings clearance with some plastguage. if they are within spec im gonna leave them alone and just put some arp rod bolts and main bolts.
