I am wanting to paint my car after I do an engine swap and I have a couple questions. For starters, I have the interior pretty much gutted already, and I plan on cleaning up the engine bay when I do the swap. So my question is, is it easier to get a paint job with the interior gutted like I have it now, or can I focus on the interior first and hold off on the paint job. It seems like it would be easier to do with the panels off and all, and I don't want to take the interior apart once I am done with it. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I would think it would be best to paint the car with the interior and the engine out. It is much easier to get in all of the nooks and crannies and you dont have to mask as much off. You probably want to take the glass out also.

Are you just repainting or are you stripping and sanding down to bare metal?

I would like to keep it the same color, but I am removing the vinyl top and thinking of removing the flashy molding on the sides and go straight metal. I would have to do some body work at that point and fill in the holes. I have never really done body work before, more of a mechanic, so I would be hesitant to go that route alone. I was going to go around town and do some pricing on paint jobs to see what my options are. Ultimately I would like to keep the sage green paint job it has now, but their are nicks and scrapes throughout the body and the rear bumper is starting to flake pretty bad. Also, the bottom of the doors has gotten out of control and I need to get that in check. I was just looking to see others advise on it. Being that it will stay the same color I don't think they need to focus too much on the inside of the body as such. Any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I laugh everytime I see somebody put a new interior in their car and then go have it painted. Great way to get dust and overspray all over your new stuff.

It's about 50 times easier to paint a car with no interior, and a lot less prep work.

As for your vinyl top, there's a pretty good chance there's some rust hiding under there, so with welding comes sparks, which are also bad for a new interior.

The moral of the story... interiors go in after paint. The end.
