I installed a Holley 650 double pump mechanical my question is,I had a Holley 600 electric choke i was use to just cranking it up and it stays running then idles down to 850rpm,now the 650cfm is giving me an issue starting up,i have to crank it a few times and pump the gas a couple of times, and then it will start but i have to hold the gas at about 2000rpm for about a minute, to warm up then ill let it go and it will idle fine is this normal, and i have to adjust the timing a hair so my main question is this a normal issue switching from a electric choke to a mechanical one.

Did you install the manual Choke cable?
Question to answer,

Is this a new or used Carb?

Float could be adjusted wrong. For a manual choke you have to close it and start the engine, after a few minute open it up.

No i dont have a cable for it,some people i talked to said i dont need one just leave the choke open, and it will be fine like that but if i want to add a cable i can can but since i dont have one dont worry about it.The carb is refurbished from National Carburetors. It worked fine when i fired it up and warmed it up a little it will stay running fine but wont fire up on 1 start i have to give it a few trys.

Think about this. You had an electric choke on your old carb and it fired up and idled. Your new carb might as well not have a choke if theres no cable to open or close it and it isn't wanting to stay running until its warm. Kind of answers your question don't it? You live in NY, you need a choke unless you don't mind warming it up. I have done with carbs that had the choke completely removed. Usually a few pumps, roll it over until it starts and keep my foot on the gas for a minute or so and it would idle out and run just fine until I let it sit overnight. Its cold out there.

Thanks and i know without a choke i will have to warm it up my self my question is is this normal for this to happen without a choke system. The reason im asking is cause i have a couple of friends that have the same carb as me and theres cranks up with no issue when its cold and they dont have an electric or choke system on theres.

Well it sounds normal to me. I've ran through plenty of michigan winters with no choke on a few different carbs and it has always been a 5min start up and idle process in the morning before I could get out of the drive way.

I would still look at the float level, basically your gas is evaporating out of your carb with longer sits. I would remove the side windows and if the fuel is flowing out with the engine off, then it is correct float level, if not there is some tunning to do. Without active choke cable you will have some issues as you know, it will require the warm up.

Another thought, does your buddy have an electrical fuel pump? If so then fuel is pushing into the carb as soon as the key is turned.

i have manual choke on my elky and i start it with the choke and then ill take off the choke and ill have to keep it revved up for a lil bit before it will idle on its own. welcome to manual choke. you can buy a cable for the choke for pritty cheap from auto zone. thats what i did, and i mounted the choke cable under the dash by the radio.
