ok i have a 78 malibu classic with a stock signawa 3speed in it and im looking to sell that transmission and either swap in my t5 out of my 93 s10pickup or just go with a turbo400 or a munci 4speed? im also swapping my 350 into it too but i need help deciding whats a good transmission to use. i like having a stick but i might go automatic, i need ppls opinions. help me out
Well for the choice between auto and stick that is mostly personal preference and how you plan on driving the car. If I was going to be in traffic tons and just cruising, auto would be my choice. However I plan on autocrossing my Olds so I'm going Muncie (also I can get one for dirt cheap).
Oh yeah and don't ever do a search for "transmission's" on google. My friend did that and came up with transvestites, thought it was pretty funny and I get to bust his balls in front of his wife.
Pesonally, I wouldn't consider a swap to an automatic. Factory stick Gbodys are kinda rare anyway. The muncie would be the most direct swap. They came in either 2.20 or 2.54 first gear ratio. These are both taller than your saginaw which is probably in the 2.75-3.00 range. The S10 transmission will put the shifter forward and closer to the center of the tunnel. It may not be a bolt in depending on the year and engine the S10 had. Usually a custom spacer is required between the trans and bellhousing because the input shaft is longer on the T-5. It will have lower first gear ratio, likely in the area of 3.00-3.50. Another option would be the Camaro/Firebird T-5. The shifter will be back and may interfere with a bench seat. They also have a dedicated bellhousing that rotates the trans 17(?) degrees to the left moving the shifter toward the driver.
I put an M-22 in a Grand Prix years ago. When I first did the swap I still had the highway gears in it. With the M-22 first gear, it was kinda hard driving. But once i installed my 3.73s and 24" tall tires, the thing was a blast.
Defenately do not swap to an auto. KEEP it a manual!
hey thanks for all the opinions guys, well if i keep it stick i need to buy new headers cause i just bought a pair of flotec headers n the drivers side doesent fit cause of the clutch linkager lever. i think i just might go automatic anyways unless i can get a munci for dirt cheap then i dont give a sh*t, but i also want something that could hold up to my 350 n handle the power and abuse. if any1 knos of a turbo 400 or 700r4 lmk asap. thanks
