I'm currently redoing the timing and putting a new radiator and other Misc. parts and was wondering if i should put the smog pump back in or leave it out and also should i take out the A/C or just leave it bypassed if it helps i live in New York... but yah i think thats all for now and in advance thank you for any help you provide..................

It all depends. Unless you are building a really fast car capable of at least the 11's or a road course car in which every pound is important to weight balance, I would leave it in. Plus, as far as I know, New York does do a smog check and the smog pump is not as big a horsepower drain as everyone thinks. The lack of A/C will not net you any appreciable gains in performance in a normal street car, and you will miss the cold air far more than you will miss the extra .05/second decrease in the quarter that you may see with it's removal. The only real positive to removing the A/C may be a slight improvement in cooling efficiency if the car is already on the brink of overheating a lot. I am a proponent of keeping all of the functionality you can in a street car as you will spend far more time in stop and go traffic than you ever will racing, so why not make the car enjoyable over the greatest possible range of situations? If an LS1 Camaro can run 12's with no more than slicks ( supposedly), and it has all the comfort items, why the heck would you gut a 14 second (or slower)car ? If ya can't be fast, at least be comfortable!

as towards the a/c the compressor is shot that is why it was bypassed in the first place and as towards the smog pump to my knowledge they don't check emissions unless it is a '96 or newer? and also i'm not looking at any racing this cars purpose is general transportation as a daily driver not as a HorsePower type thing (i don't believe in beating on my cars at the track)

Well, the smog pump may trigger a check engine light as the diverter valve is computer controlled, and removing the A/C compressor is OK so long as you seal the lines in case you wish to put it back in at a later time. You could also find a used R4 compressor with a V belt clutch and replace yours. Then you could have the A/C for probably around $100 with a new condenser, R134a cycling switch ( Napa), refrigerant, flush and orifice tube. Racing is not harmful to your car, by the way, unless you are stupid. I have run my Frontier at the drag strip numerous times and it has managed to go 262k city miles so far and uses no oil, and still has good compression ( 160psi all 4 cyl.).It's all in how you care for your vehicle. Heck, I went 200k on the original clutch and relentlessly power shifted it while using it as a pizza delivery truck since it was new.

as of now i think i'm going to leave the A/C bypassed and also i asked a friend who knows alot about older cars (he has a 68 caprice, and an 81 cutlass, and about 12 other cars i can't remember right off the top of my head) and he said as long is its under '95 then emmisions don't matter now its all up to the stupid check engine light, if i don't come on then the smog pump will stay off if it does then it'll go back on :?:

My SES light stayed off. Its only on now because the ECM and carb and distributor and everything else is gone. I just haven't dealt with it, yet.
