I have a 87 Oldsmobile 442 with a new olds 403 6.6l engine. I currently have a 3" exhaust with headers and flow tech terminator mufflers with no cats. because this car is way to loud for the streets of southern California, I need to quiet it down a lot! I was thinking of installing a pair of Borla pro xs mufflers, from what I have heard, they are the quietest performance mufflers out there. I have also heard that the dynomax super turbo mufflers are quiet too. can anyone help me with some suggestions on what I can use to get the car more quiet? I'm open to any ideas.

Thanks!

check out pypes exhaust

Thanks for the reply. I Did check out pypes, but had no luck finding a quiet muffler.

Installing a x-pipe will also aid in making it less noisy. Because the crossflow tends to cancell the exhaust tone of each side. I did this on my wagon and it alone helped a bit.

I have heard of adding a x pipe but have never gotten any feed back on if it aids in toning the sound down, thanks a lot! Do you know if it matters if I reduce pipes into a 2.5" and then back out to a 3" or should I keep it all the same dimension?

How quiet do you need? They pypes street pros aren't all that loudl.
pipe size wont have a great effect on sound level, just type. But if you reduce the diameter some after the mufflers, it can improve power by maintaining flow velocity

I need it quiet enough that I won't attract the CHP, I'd like a nice mellow tone.

I like Magnaflow, quiet at cruising but still loud when you get on it.

In my personal experience, adding an X-pipe (not H), will quiet it down some.

Do what I plan on doing to quiet down mine. Mine's a 555 with 3" exhaust and it's WAY too loud for the streets and I need to quiet it down some for the same reasons. I got headers, hi flow Magnaflow cats, H-pipe, and Flowmaster Super 40 mufflers currently. Deathly loud.

My plans:

1. I got these exhaustSilencers inserted prior to rear exhaust tips... there's other kinds too.
2. Walker Quiet flow mufflers -- apparently they flow better than Flowmasters
