67-77 Mazda Familia or Kia Brisa?

Ding ding ding..... And the prize goes to drogg1.

Kinda of a vague guess but kudos for being so close. It's a 1970 Mazda 1200. Around this time Mazda was called toyo kogyo. If you google it and find a slightly different lOoking version that's because there was an Asian market and an American market version. This is the us version. Started life as a 4 seater and is now a mid engine 1 seater . Race seat in the back middle.

The car is named "balls to the wall" because when youre in the seat you are straddling the engine. So your balls are actually on the firewall .

The goal with this car was to go 10s for under 3k. Currently setup for an sbc and will be getting a 305 or 350 just so we can figure out the suspensiOn and stuff but then were going bigger. Can you guess which power plants? They aren't very common.

^ Or ya that. In both cases the front grill has been modified though I think.

You're on a roll. Right again. It's fabricated round bars running horizontal welded together and bolted on.

How can you guess "what engine" with just the hint "it's uncommon".

But since it's a Mazda car, I'm gonna guess it a 20B 3 Rotor... Because that's what I would use if I wanted a really fast Mazda.

Not that uncommon. They will all be American v8s. Probably gm.

Well I kinda "cheated". You said it was owned by Ford and I just sort of narrowed it down to Mazda and then found what older Mazda looked close. Wasn't sure exactly what model designation it was (1000, 1200, etc) so I just gave a year range and general model. I didn't really think it was the Kia but I just added that too. pontiacgp is right that it does look like an Alfa Romeo.

After looking at yours and other pictures I want one! Those things look like a neat little project. Especially with how you've modded it thus far. Not to mention the mid-engine! I didn't even read that. That would be pretty rad to put a sbc in. I don't doubt you'll be able to go 10s for that price.

409 W head, what a beautiful motor. But I said uncommon, not exotic 😀.

Maybe im making this too hard, so ill just tell ya.

Meet "Big Block Corner".

This whole thing started when someone was giving away a free Olds 403, so I went and picked it up. Naturally, when you have a free engine you need something to put it in. So we ended up getting the race car (a freind and I, joint race car). So some of our other projects that have gotten put on hold will get their engines run in this car. The only thing new in the engines below will be gaskets, bearings and rings. Were not buying fancy exotic parts for it, just stuff off the shelf. If we dont hit 10's with any of the engines below, it will get a healthy shot of nitrous, or maybe a belt driven supercharger.

Olds 403, with 455 heads intake and oiling. Mild comp camshaft, with upgraded springs. Offy intake.
Buick 430 +0.030, with a mild crane cam, and 1972 heads (lose a tiny bit of compression there). Stock ports, and a B4B intake.
Buick 455 +0.030, with a TA performance camshaft, home-ported heads, KB rockers, and a TA SP1 intake. (This engine is built for my Skylark, but I dont currently own a Skylark, so itll run in this car).

Was planning to run a Cadillac 500, but that engine was spoken for when my 472 blew up. The 472 is currently for sale, but if it doesnt sell, itll be regasketted and run.

And here they are labelled.

In the last two pix where you can see the Race Car, there are 2 engines on the stand. RED=Buick 430, and BLUE=Olds 403.

that 462 block will make an awesome table...
