Beside the 3 plastic plugs that plug into my Cutlass radio, there is also coming out of the back of the radio a plug with 2 wires that I assume is for the power antenna, but also a single black wire with a plug. What's this single black wire for? Thanks-Russ

you use only the one and it is either switched ignition or constant power, its been awhile i forget... i think its switched ignition. the other is not used

1984-87 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme Stereo Wiring
Constant 12V+ Orange
Switched 12V+ Yellow
Ground Black
Illumination Gray
Dimmer Brown
Antenna Trigger Pink
Antenna Right Front
Front Speakers 3 1/2" Dash
Left Front (+) Tan
Left Front (-) Gray
Right Front (+) Light Green
Right Front (-) Dark Green
Rear Speakers 4" x 10" Rear Deck
Left Rear (+) Brown
Left Rear (-) Yellow
Right Rear (+) Dark Blue
Right Rear (-) Light Blue

maybe this will help ya, I know one of the two wires in the two plug are needed, corresponding to the colors listed above, the black might just be a ground but honestly I can't remember, check it with a test light

wireing

Thanks for the help, I already have all the wire codes from "the12volt.com" webpage, but that black wire must be for a constant power source for the memory (time and station).

my electrical manual is for the 81 (but it shouldn't have changed) I can check it when I get home but all the stereos I've done ... I don't recall a seperate "powerred" black wire ... plugin wise there should be the trio plugs (front speakers/back speakers/power, ground illumination, etcetera), the power antennea (yellow/orange wires with white plug) and the antennea. If you got a black wire that has power - I think that has been added by someone after the fact. Factory GM wiring uses black for ground wires ... I've never seen an exception to that rule and an exception would be awefully confusing. I believe memory was tied into illumination (but that is really what I want to doublecheck with the manual).

the 81 is different then the 84 and newer cars, the 81 had the old shft style radios in them and they were ran different, i dont even think you can get a aftermarket harness to plus into those can you? :?

wiring still the same even with the shaft style radios and yes the plug in harnasses work. I was curious where the 84 and up came from myself. My guess is that perhaps all the 81 didn't have rear speakers - as I do recall more than one schematic in the book.

my 78 i had did have front and rear speakers but it had a single plug with like 8 wires maybe? i was thinkin it was that way up until 83? i could be worng, ask my girl, i am always wrong according to her lol j/k

well I got a gaping hole in the dash - need a picture?
It has the same trio connectors (well OK it DID before someone got happy rewiring and hacked into the factory harnasses but 2 of the connectors are still there) and power antenna hook up the din and half stereos did. Remember the 81 was the upcoming G-body style and was a combination of left-over 80 m/y parts and 82 m/y parts. Once you remove the trim and unbolted the metal support bracket - you had the same factory din and half openning. If I dug through my spare parts I could easily put a factory Din and 1/2 in, but why?
