I just put a new engine and transmission in my 86 Monte Carlo SS and I know that the factory rear end is not known for reliability when you start adding alot more power. I want to put a ford 9" but I cant afford it. Is there a rear out of another car like a Grand National that would bolt right in without modifications? Thanks I appreciate any imput.

Well for a simple strait bolt in there is no "Grand National rear" it is simply a 8.5 10 bolt rear used in a
Grand National
Olds 442
Buick T Type
But even these rears fetch 500-1400 depending on your location.

I dont know why people keep calling them GN rears once removed from the car its simply a gbody 8.5 10 bolt  .
You can also use a 12bolt or 10 bolt 8.5/8.2 from a 68-72 chevelle but you need a differnt set of rear control arms and a different offset rim becAuse the rears a re a little wider.

Thanks that helps alot. I dont know a whole lot about cars as Im just starting to really learn about them. I wasnt sure what rear was in the GN I've just always heard them referred to as a grand national rear end.

I see people refer to them as that because i guess it makes them gold and worth a fortune. But the rears came in those cars years i am 100% positive 85-87 and for some reason I think 84

84' was the 1st year GM used the 8.5 rear in a G body. The Hurst Olds and the Buick GN/T types had them. Definitely a strong rear end that has been track proven by several very quick G bodies.
