Does anyone know what the size/thread of the nut that holds the anchor pin for the rear brakes to the backing plate? I know a 13/16 wrench fits it, and that it was originally a lock-nut (why?).

Its fine thread I recall. 13/16 sounds about right. It holds the cylinder and serves as a pivot point for the brake shoes.

Just checked again, it's definitely coarse thread. Is there any real purpose for a lock not? You don't want it coming off, but would there be any issue using a regular nut, possibly with some loctite?

A new 7/8 hex coarse thread nut does in fact fit the pin. The original is 13/16 hex. However, the threads are the same.
