rear springs

changed the rear springs in a 1979 hurst olds, 1980 442, 1985 442, and a 1985 salon just this summer.........all are NOT bolted in. the mounting rings you speak of in the monte are already welded/bolted to the car/frame/rear end.
springs simply held in by the shocks and the weight of the car

peace

I was just looking at my rear springs to see how they would come out. They are not bolted in. I will be taking them out tomorrow or Tuesday, I will let you know for sure.

if they don't bolt in, how do f-body or wagon springs stay in though since there is no pigtail? I've heard of this swap, but have never heard or recieved a clear answer.

They stay in due to the weight of the vehicle. Shock travel limits how far the axle will come down and that is not enough to let the springs fall out during...oohhh..say Dukes of Hazard driving! That is why you must unbolt one end of the shock and then lower the axle to replace the spring. Of course if you change any of the stock measurements(such as cutting coils making the spring shorter) you run the risk of stuff happening that is not supposed to happen!!Unless you engineer safegaurds(such as bolting springs in). I am not going to say that all rear springs are unsecured, but it has been my experience that most are not.

Well, I will say that out of my 9 g-bodies I've had, and about a dozen more that I've worked on, my 442 and that Monte SS are the only cars that I've seen them in. Maybe I'll have to go grab the pieces to show everybody what they look like. I wonder why so few cars had them...?

The untouched, low mile '84 Monte SS we had at work had the rear springs bolted in. I kept the pieces when we put airride in it. Unfortunately I stuffed them along with a ton of other parts in the back of my wagon when I put it in storage, so I can't take a picture to show them. It is a small dish with a collar around it that fits into the ear on the spring, and a bolt goes through it and the frame to hold it in place. Somebody else better speak up so I don't sound crazy! My 442 had them as well, maybe it's just an F41 thing?
no you dont sound at all!Or we bouth do...i have sring bolted to axle.but not in top...car is -79 royal knight.

Two things
1. I've never seen springs bolted in on any of the half dozen or so g-body's I've worked on. But Blake442, I'll take your word that they're out there.
2.Malibulvr, this past weekend I bought a set of 68-72 A-body springs for $20 on your suggestion from a previous thread/post. I did research on what you said and it sound what I was looking for on my malibu...thanks and I'll let you know how it turns out.

All the work i have done was on GPs and Cutlasses with a few MCs. None were SS or 442 or anything real special. Most were V6 cars. I never saw bolt in spings on any of them, but i doubt any were F41 cars. I wonder if thats what the difference is? The only car i can verify as completly original is my GP though. I have no idea about the rest of them. I would like to help figure this one out!
