Rear window chrome clips and mounting

Thanks. Every eBay ad for lowers is in threes so I didn't know if that's the amount I needed.

That link was more or less for reference of what you need and what they look like. If I recall correctly, you need between 5 and 6 to securely mount the lower trim.

I had my rear window out to be resealed last summer. If I recall correctly I think the bottom used 5 clips mabey 6. I also was able to source them at my local Napa for a lot less than what they are on ebay. The downside is I had to order a whole box which I think was 8 pieces. I just can't seem to find the box right now or I would post a pic with the part number.

So I have all my studs drilled and mounted and clips on the top and sides. I received my lowers in today and from what it looks like I need to remove the filler panel to put these on. Can anyone verify that

Yes, remove the panel and you'll see recessed areas along the length of the panel. That's where the clips attach.

Are you converting from a vinyl roof to a hardtop? If so, you’ll also need the hardtop specific filler panel clips that secure the front of the filler panel to the back window. They’re completely different than the plastic vinyl roof stands that are likely there now.

The clips look like these:

And attach to the brackets that are welded on underneath the filler panel (as seen here):

I’ve done this same conversion on my ‘80 Cutlass, and most of it is documented in my build thread “Project Olds Cool”. The link to it is in my signature, look for the section that pertains to what your doing starting at around page 53 and going through to around page 60 or so.

It should help you understand what needs to be changed.

I searched on the napa website and couldn't find anything. Probably wasn't looking in the right place.

Parts book says you need 8, but I don't recall it taking 8. I could be wrong, it's been a long time since I did a rear window. These install "upside down" with the umbrella arches pointing downward on the filler panel. It's hard to describe, but once you see them, you'll get it.

They actually had to look them up in the paper book , they couldn't find them in the computer until they had the part number and manufacturer from the book. Like I said I had to order a box of 8 but there was only 5 on my car when I took it apart.

Weird. They normally came in a box of 10 from GM. At least back when I was buying them. I don't think 1 box would cover 2 cars. I don't think. Hell, it's been so long. It seems none of us can remember exactly! 🙂
