so the rear end on my bros 87 ls started humming after a 4 hour round trip, we took off the cover theyre is no metal shaving or anything like that what could it be?, he didnt want to deal with it and he got another rear end cheap from his cousin so he has this one extra and i know its geared better than the one on my 78 cutlass, whats your guys diagnosis on the rear end? also could i get the posi out of a fourth gen camaro and swap the internals to my g body rearend?

Humming is usually a bearing.

what you need to do is get some paste so you can check the mating of the pinion and crown gear and check the backlash...that'll tell you if a bearing on the pinion is going bad if the mating is off and the backlash is excessive. I've also seen some shims for the backlash setting get out of place if they used some thin shims on the outside right beside the tube which could cause the backlash to be off..the backlash should be .006 - 010

the car had hydraulics, back used to lift monster truck high, and it would smash the drivelin into the transmission prolly screwed it up the rearend, also car was on 2 wheels.... we almost rolled it in a parking lot 🙁
