Well on my 84 monte CL it had the wide chrome along the bottom,I didn't like it so i took them off. Once i did that i removed the clips that held the trim on.Then i was left with studs that hold the clips in place.
I just took a cut of wheel an cut them off CAREFULLY trying my best not to cut in to the metal no more than needed,so when the time comes to do BODYWORK to all those spots it wouldn't be so much work.I don't recommend grinding them off.I tried that on the first couple an it creates a lot of heat,an chance of warpage. But it will get the job done keeping in mind you'll need to do body work anyway
As for relocating the thinner trim it would be just a matter of PLACEMENT of the screws, that replaces those studs. Then put the clips on,then the trim.Easier said then done, but i am sure it's not that hard.
The screws in the pic are actually to hold the stainless window molding trim CLIPS in place "replaces broken or rusted studs" i think they'll work for your clips but not really sure on that. As for finding the chrome trim in good shape GOOD LUCK lol most always have dent, nicks, scratches, but you never know you may find a car in the scrap yard that has near mint ones
