Can someone explain to me how the governor on for instance a 200r4 has to be matched to the rear end? How does the governor, which controls shift points, have any relationship to the gearing in the rear end?
i believe the governor controls the shift points according to RPM and SPEED so when your rear gearing changes your rpm shift points may be the same but the speed will be different so you'll have to modify or buy a new governor setup.
the governor is driven off the tailshaft. it had 2 vertical arms with weights at the end. as the spped increases and the gov spins faster the arms swing up and out. this changes the position of 2 small ball bearings that allow trany fluid pressure to change by how much room it has to flow past them. the amount of pressure determins shift quality and point. this is only to maintain power and shift quality at/based on varying speeds. (the throttle valve is the primary control, the gov secondary) if the governor is spinning at the wrong speed it will not adjust the line pressure properly and the shifts will be off.
to match the gov/speedo gear to the actual rear gear you must know what rear gear you have, then get the right gears (i got mine from Bowtie Overdrives). to install them you have to remove the trans pan, then the governor. pull the gear up the gov shaft and replace. if you try and replace the plastic clip under the gear BE CAREFUL AND TAKE PICS BEFOREHAND!! i didn't do this and everything fell apart and i didn't know how it was assembled. luckily i didn't lose the balls (no jokes please :lol: ) but getting it all back together sucked!
