There's obvious spam like the Chinese auto-bots and then there's "well its not exactly the right thing to do but maybe not nefarious...."

In the former I have no issue with calling out the offenders publicly because they're evil scumbags who deserve to have terrible things done to them and their fingers broken for polluting the internet with their garbage.

In the latter, eh, probably not so much. They probably just didn't know they weren't supposed to. Sometimes you have to give people a little benefit of doubt and maybe just let me know via PM, use the "report post" buttons, throw out a "hey I see you're trying to help but you might want to contact the admin first" etc. For all you guys know I've already talked to them and gave them permission.

We unfortunately already ran off everyone who's wheels were larger than some pre-determined standard a while ago, lets not run literally EVERYONE off.

Lots of new users turning up, lots of whom it seems aren't familiar with the gold-standard decades old "internet forum" and how it works. They often use texting shortcuts and slang we're not familiar with.. They're maybe only familiar with Facebook and Twitter and don't quite get the asynchronous, non-instant, silo-ed and hierarchical info structure of the forum. Yeah I don't get it either, but its just how it is. Let's help them figure it out before we chase them out of town with pitchforks, K?

Sorry, just rubbed me really wrong....
A legitimate business person doesn't just start posting links to their goods in relevant threads. There's a for sale section for that. I like UMI's style: sponsor, post sales in the appropriate section, and have a badass car in the build section (with kickass vids).
I was only alerted to this "nefarious " practice because he posted in a thread I started. I guess I'm more upset that I paid 50% of GM's asking price for Chinese crap when he's selling Chinese crap for 25% of the GM price...

Maybe its age talking here, I don't know, but, last time I looked, this ISN'T facebook, and it's not twitter or some group text thing.

I'd think we could solve some of that with a new member page that is short (or they won't bother) but explains the decorum that's expected and they can educate themselves before starting threads and such.

I understand your interest in wanting to expand the audience, but, if you change too much in one direction you're going to run off and silence the other side.

You're right about the texting shortcuts and slang. And when I see it, I just close the post and move on. I really dont care to waste my time trying to decipher what someone else is asking or talking about.

Likewise, we have had some members whose tone is instantly to disrespect others, loves to curse, and then goes back and edits or deletes posts... I don't even bother participating in their threads.

But then again, thats the point here. If that kind of behavior were the norm, and made up the majority of the site, I'd probably leave for elsewhere and I'm sure many others would as well.

Is there a middle ground? Maybe... then again, most schools don't even teach grammar anymore. I don't mind a mispelling here and there, but I won't waste 5 minutes just trying to decipher what someone is talking about. _

That made me chuckle

Yes. When I update things it will be mandatory for a new user to read a “welcome/rules” thread before they can post.

Not saying I want to turn this into Facebook or twitter either. Just that we assume everyone just knows what you’re supposed to do and not do, and that’s not really true, so let’s help them to figure it out instead of yelling “get off my lawn”.
