I'm not sure about the column shifter upgrade. I know you have to disconnect the linkage from the trans and I know that the collar that the shift lever is connected to rotates around a "ring" that is attached to the actual post that is the column but I'm not sure if you have to remove the steering wheel to get at it.
If you are talking about switching the whole column be advised that often the wiring harness plug on the column won't be pinned the same as the replacement, even if they both came out of the same model and year car. I did the swap once and had to pay a guy to figure out the wiring. Major pain and took three days.
I was going to make a suggestion. I have a 79 Malibu with a bench seat. I replaced the column shifter with a B & M ratchet shifter that I mounted on the floor. (see pic) It mounted right where I wanted it and the bech can still slide all the way forward. I REALLY like this shifter. It works like a charm, you can't miss a gear if you're in go fast mode and if your'e just driving it works like a regular shifter.
I'm 59 and too fat to be crawling under cars and it still only took me 45 minutes to install. I really suggest you look into this before you tackle the column update.
I took the picture at 2 am a couple days ago and from a bad angle. The shifter really does look good. I don't like the little console they give you with it so my wife is making me a boot.
Anyway, which ever way you go, good luck!!
