How do replace a rear main seal? Mine started leaking pretty bad this weekend out of the blue. Wondering if I have to pull the engine or drop the transmission to do it? The motor is '78 350 in a '83 Cutlass Supreme.

If its a chevy 350 you can just drop the oil pan and then you take off the rear main cap. But it would be easier you pulled the engine to access it. But then you have to go to all that work of unbolting everything.

It should still be the same. But either way you will have to jack the motor up from the motor mounts to pull the pan out. Are you sure it's the rear main? I've seen a pan gasket cause the same problem and I don't know if the oil pressure switch is the same location as big block fords, small and big chevys, and dodges but they hook up at the top back of the block and if they leak it will look the same as a rear main.
