Best way to clean a clogged rod

Soak them in solvent of carb cleaner, blast the inside with carb cleaner (dissolves carbon), clean the passage with compressed air. Honestly, If they're so coked up that they're actually plugged, I wouldn't want them in my engine no matter how clean I hope to get them. They aren't that expensive to replace. $20 for SBC and $25 for SBO on Rockauto for the set of 16.
