need some ideas here guys.... bolt head is completely rounded off, and even tried hammering on a smaller socket, to no avail... I've got 3 sets of fluted bolt extractors, but for some reason, only one set has one to fit the 5/16, and it's missing in action..... I'm going to try to pick one up tomorrow, but if that doesn't work, I need some other options.

any thoughts :?:

try snapping the bolt head off..... :puke: I left the rear end as is, but that was on my old Astro van. I also rounded off my crossshaft pin on my 8.5 but I used a spline socket to remove it and I used a torch to lightly heat up the area the pin threaded into to melt the threadlocker...replaced it with a new one as well. You can also try one of these to extract it:

i drill the bolt with the same size drill bit thru just the head of the bolt and with a cold chisel i knock the head off. then heat and drill the remaining stud for the size need for the extractor. with out the bolt head alot of stress is taken off the bold and should be easyer to remove with an extractor. its worked for me. some times after the head comes off i could remove whats remaining with come channel locks. good luck

85,
I have 3 sets of those, and mysteriously, the one set I have that has a small enough one to fit, is missing that one piece...

delreyss,
may end up going that route... may have to finally pick up a torch...

pontiacgp,
may end up starting with that one... gonna hit sears to see if I can grab an extractor to replace the missing one like 85GP was showing... if that doesn't work, I'll try the welding , then to drilling if that doesn't work..

Thanks for the replies guys, this gives me a few options to try...

BTW, I do have another cross pin ordered, should be in this afternoon....

when you get the new pin I found the best tool for it was a brake bleeder wrench. It has a boxed 5/16 six point on one end

got it out... my welds suck, so the nut kept breaking loose. ended up using a combination of heat, extruder, and mini-sledge. fustration is sometimes the best solution!

thanks for the help guys!
Darin

you got it out in one piece...nice job and hopefully you had a nice cold beer after you got it out..
