S60 axle in/Out Play

What's your endplay now? I had .030" on one side and .040" on the other of my Camaro. Way too much, so 1/4"+ should never see the road. It would knock the brake pads back and cause a long pedal.
S60 is only the center from Strange. The ends depend on what they put on the end of the axle housing for your application.
A Dana 60 from a Mopar musclecar will have 2 tapered bearings. One on each side. Similar to the front of a G body. 2 tapered bearing and you set the preload with the big nut and lock it down with a cotter pin.
The set up on A Castro's S60 has roller bearing on each end and the backing plates capture each roller bearing. The end play on a roller bearing is pretty much zero. The outer bearing race should be pinched into the axle housing by retainer rings or the backing plate. Zero meaning it can not move side to side. If there is any side to side, that will be coming from the bearing, not the outer race.

Nope, all stock on the 10 bolt. I did get some custom c clips that were a bit thicker than stock and also burned a weld into the end of each axle shaft to get the endplay down in the .010" range. I just wanted to point out that 1/4" is very excessive for endplay and how it can affect the driving experience. Much less of an issue on a street car vs a road race car.
Rt Jam: You are correct in your assessment. There is a small spacer between the face of the axle tube and the backing plate. The backing plate is what holds the bearing pressed into the housing bore with no in/out play. The bearing is a tight fit into the housing end (no side to side play)

Finally got my bearings with the correct backing plates installed on the axles. Was going to install today but... it is in the 20's today (In TX!) I can't work with gloves on so will have to wait un til it warms up next week. Yesterday it was in the mid 70's. Pic to follow next week.

S60 is in completely, finally. Drive shaft is being shortened to 53 1/8in from end of trans housing to center of rear yoke. Should be ready by next week so then the real test of will it fit correctly? Had to go all the way to Autin TX (1hr drive one way)
Been out to see the kids in MI and CA so the car has been sitting for over a month with no work done on it.
