What do you mean by salvaged? Like from a junkyard? I personally haven't but I know several people who have, typically they offer a short warranty for an engine. If you're talking about something else then I dunno.

I wouldnt use any engine without atleast running a simple compression test and making sure it turns over relatively easy. Also its a good idea to put all new gaskets in it. Whenever I get a new (or new to me) engine I ALWAYS install a new oil pump after a bad past experience.

Yes, a few times. These were relatively late model (at the time) collision repair cases. But, we bought from a first-line yard with a warranty, not the typical old-school yard.

With what I see for pricing these days, doesn't make much sense to me.

I do that often. But as stated, a compression test will tell if it's even healthy enough to bother with. Look under a valve cover for mud. Then I do the "treatment". Oil pump, water pump, carb, distributor, plugs, wires, maybe a starter and alternator, timing set, oil pan timing cover and valve cover gaskets. I won't pull heads unless I absolutely have to. Strip it down, power wash, paint, new mounts, and it's good for many years of service.
