The 350 mod seems to be the most popular. Replace the 305 with a 350. Then Mod it.

It shares all of it's accessories, mounting points, and transmission bell housing bolt pattern with all of the small block family. The options are nearly endless for increased performance via swap. I personally wouldn't try to modify the 305. Small bores saddled with tiny port heads, run off of a nearly flat camshaft (before the lobes fall off), and swamp water compatible compression ratio conspire to make it less than awe inspiring.

Do what you want.

Keep the 305 stock. Spend your time and money on better gears and an overdrive.

You can also do the usual small block hop up.An Eldelbrock Performer intake manifold .and a set of FlowTech "shorty headers and true dual ,with the mufflers of your choice,And a good tune to optimize it.It all depends on your state emission laws your skills and your budget, Plus you can do it as you can afford it.

When I first got the Monte and wasn't sure what direction i wanted to go with it, I threw new head gaskets on, dropped a Summit 1103 cam, non CCC q-jet, standard vacumn advance HEI with a curve kit through a dynomax exhaust and new cat. It was never a torque monster (especially at 6000 ft) but ran well and was actually fun on the highway. At sea level it would actually spin the tires partway through first gear. So I tried to blow it up, ripped it out and chucked an LT1 350 in it.......

X2 nothing will wake up that 305 like a set of gears 3.23s or 3.42s . If you plan on a over drive then go with 3.73s or 4.10s.

305's are great engines. You won't break any land speed records no matter what you do with them but you can make them respectable for a little bit of $$$. They're good on gas, can take a severe beating and run forever with 0 problems if you maintain them. I just sold a firebird that I put a 305 in. The block was a '77 block with 50k with fresh "H.O." 601 casting early-mid 80's heads. I put an Edelbrock performer intake (just the basic performer intake, not RPM, not EPS), Edelbrock 1406 carb, Summit headers, TH350 w/2700 stall converter, Summit HV oil pump and an L-79 camshaft and timing set from E-bay in it. For a 305, it pulled harder than I would have ever expected and it didn't cost much to build (Less than $1000 for everything including the converter). If I told you it was a mild 350, you would have believed it. The car was originally a V6 and had the factory rear end in it, never even checked the gearing, didn't care. I've put together a bunch of 305's with the Summit 1102 cam (same as Edelbrock 2102) in front of a TH350 with a 2000 stall converter and that works very well also. The L-79 did seem to pull harder than the 1102 even though I figured it would have been too big but the Summit 1102 with a 2000 stall converter is a better combo for a DD. I've tried the summit K00172 camshaft (thumper cam) in a 305, it sounded incredible but didn't pull worth $h!t. 305's are great for cruisers and you don't need a 350 to have fun. I'd take a good running dependable 305 any day of the week. I have some fast small blocks with big $$$ in them but I have no problems with a 305.

Depends on what type of 305 you have, early LG4, late LG4, or HO L69. The early LG4s have low 8.5 CR while later LG4s have 9 CR and L69s have 9.5 CR. The L69 also have slightly larger valves, bigger carb jets, better cam, higher stall TC, highef performance computer tune, higher flow fuel pump, etc. Good starting place is putting in a real double roller timing chain.
