Looking for any information regarding shift kits/transmission upgrades for this old 3-speed. Who makes them, which brands to buy/avoid, testimonials, and risks or damages that may be involved. I'm used to driving manuals and have little experience with automatics and what they can do, so please forgive my ignorance.

Is your engine modified? Those th200 don't handle it well. They are not desireable transmissions for performance. Upgrading to a th350 which would drop right in would be a great upgrade over the th200.

To answer your question trans go shift kits from what I have read around have a great reputation. I have used b&m shift kits and have worked great.

My engine is a bone stock 3800 V6. I had read the 200's have a high failure rate when mated to V8s. What can they handle power/tq wise? I was looking into a 500 CFM Edlebrock Performer carb as well but am unsure if it'll fit. I'll look into the th350 tonight, thank you.

The TH-200 are crappy transmissions. I had one paired to a Buick V6 (3.8Ltr). While it was used in the United States, the transmission handled 20000miles in Tennessee. After I bought the car and had it transfered to Europe, it blew after aproximately 500miles. The traffic here is to tough to keep any TH200 alive. Especially the TH-200C. Never hook it up to a V8. If you got the opportunity, throw it out and swap a TH400 in 😉 a TH350 is fine too ^^

I know a few other people who had issues with the TH200's and if they had to share their issues/worries with said transmission, they'd rant for hours

I'm currently running the TransGo shift improver kit in my 200, and it seemed to really help alot.

The 2-3 shift is super firm now, the 1-2 is waaay better, but could be a little firmer IMO. I've heard a billet servo from a 200-4r would work, this should really firm it up the 1-2. Don't get me wrong, the kit overall improved everything. Quite a big difference. I am also running the Buick v6, slightly modified, and never had any problems with the transmission, even before I put in the kit.

Also it took me only a few hours to install. I would say it woke it up, shifts like a nice stock th350 now.
