I have a factory floor shifter (84 Monte Carlo) it is now stuck with 2 choices, neutral and drive. I took it apart and it seems like the thumb button is not fully moving the little release underneath. What is the deal? The white doohickey that looks like a pearl necklace?

The button is not pushing the catch all the way down....you may need to take the shifter selector out of the console and grind down the inside of the catch, to give it more clearance...clarence..lol

Thanks, it has worked all the time I have owned the car, up until now, so I am thinking something else.

I'm surprised no one else has had this issue.

If it's similar to the Cutlass make sure the retainer for the cable running to the trans is still clipped. Hard to explain, but have a real good look right around where the shift mechanism is inside the car. Cable runs out the front and there should be a system retaining it to the shift bracket.
Hope this helps a little.

you could always replace the white do-hicky, or in my case i swapped out the whole shifter for the tci fast gate...

Thanks - the cable is clipped into the shifter base.

Seems like the thumb button doesn't disengage the catch like it used to.

The button may have broken inside....take the shifter T handle off..you should be able to push the mechanism down enough to shift the shifter. If not, theres a problem inside the console, on the shifter plate....which could be loose>?

x2.....to get the T off there is a U shape retainer to pry out at the base of the T, in case you don't know

Thanks - I know how it goes together.

I have [LITERALLY] been through every part of this car front to back top to bottom in the past 2 1/2 years. It is kinda like a poor boy's frame off resto.

Anyway, has anyone ever experienced this same issue with a stock type shifter?

I had this problem with a 71 cutlass.... the shifter bolt had fallen out on the highway and the car was stuck in low.... Is the collar on the steering column moving with the shifter? try turning it with your hand as you move the shifter handle. im stumped :worthless:
