Sounds to me like a bad shifter cable. But if your positive its good take the handle off and turn the white plastic piece counter clock wise this will allow you to adjust it up some might give you the extra push down through shifter to make it disengage slot in Detent plate. Also make sure the slide cam in handle is actually moving.

The column is un-related to floor in this case. Floor shifter was installed by me a year or so ago. Has worked fine up until this week. The shifter cable (which goes down to selector on side of transmission) was new last summer.
