I would just use a relay to power them so that you get a more direct path to battery voltage, and bypass 20+year old wiring that could make them look dim.

Yes, that is exactly what the kits are. I picked one up off ebay for $10 or so - wasn't worth wiring it up myself for that 😀
Some people have gotten away with the factory wiring, but the breaker in my headlight switch, and a new replacement would start to cut out after the brights were on for 5min or so.
