Im thinking about removing my smog/air pump , will it hurt the performance ( or lack of LOL ) on the motor as it is now ? I was going to take the hose from the driver side valve cover and run it directly to the pass side mounted control valve just so there is no opening in the vent tube system

I gutted the internals on my pump and plugged the pipes at the exhaust manifold. I JB Welded the air tube shut at the catalytic converter. It appears stock with the belt still attached. In my area the smog equipment must be in place even there is no emission check.

What on Earth was your point in doing that? The whole point of removing the smog pump is to actually REMOVE it!

To answer the op's question, yes you can remove the ENTIRE A.I.R. system. Only thing you gotta make sure you do is plug the little tube on your cat if you're still running the stock style one.

Because.....

I think that the smog pump takes about 1 or 2 HP to turn

Either way I ditched mine for a cleaner look

If you need to keep the air system for visual inspections then just leave it be. Gutting it doesn't do squat for performance.

Gutted the air pump due to it being worn internally - scraping sound, not the pump nose bearing. I believe it's a rotary pump - one of the vanes was bad.

Technically yes but realistically no. The drag on the belt from the air pump is practically nothing. Remove the belt and you might get around 1 hp I'd say.

I'm not trying to get a racecar, just trying to get it to run as good as it can
