Buddy selling a great running olds 350, 1971 4bbl engine. Thought hey, clean it up, paint black, keep it on the ccc system and have a bit more power.

I know its my car and I can do what I want with it, but would you do it? I like the stock clean original. And the 307 has plenty of power for cruising, but a bit more power would be nice.

Thoughts?

Swap immediately! It's still an Olds engine, and should increase the value of your vehicle.

what he said ^^ x2. If you want then leave all the 307 stuff on it and call it a 307 down to the air cleaner and qjet ( just dump those useless 307 crossover manifolds either way ). I promise not to tell anyone.

The 442 vin 9 version is a slightly better version of the swirl port turd. Even that 71 would only be a mild improvement especially with the crappy stock exhaust. Too bad Olds didn't use the FE3X prototype's shorty headers and Y pipe on the 442. I almost bought a 87 442, nice and cheap. I was going to either add Thornton manifolds or Sanderson headers, a custom Y pipe along with one of experimental swirl port TBI intakes, a big bore TBI with 305 injectors and computer.

That's why I bought a Cutlass instead of a 442. My opinion is if you have a nice original 442 or Hurst Olds take pride in keeping it that way there only original once. If you have anything else like a Cutlass chop it up! Modify the sh*t out of it it's just a Cutlass with Asma anyway

See that was always my thought as well. That's why I always bought cutlasses, to thrash and mod. Hmm

That 350 only has about the same hp and maybe 10 to 20 ft/lbs of torque. Now with modern pistons to bump the compression from 8 to 1 to lows 9's along with a nice cam would be night and day with a warm 350. The is where I might add Thorton manifolds with a much better Y pipe to look stock to most onlookers.

The 8.5" rear and 200-4R are the best things about the '85-'87 442. The 307 is just a boat anchor.
