So, I’m building a bracket car for my wife (80 ElCo) for next year and I’m about to put the front end back together. I’ve updated all steering, suspension and brake components except the steering box. I’m torn between PS and the S10 manual box for her. How difficult is the manual box to steer at speed / out of the hole? She is a newbie racer and this will be a track only car.

What’s your opinion? Or offer a different recommendation.

Thanks,

Dave

on circle track cars we always have power steering, manual is ok as long as everything goes according to plan but if you get out of shape you want the power steering to be able to react quickly. We do everything we can to drop weight but I don't think that is a big concern in drag racing so what would be the advantage to manual steering? There are racing pumps that have very little drag on the engine if there is a concern about that but they are pricey

I've never driven a G with an S10 box but I have driven manual steering S10s. They aren't hard to steer at all at speed. Manual boxes do have a slower ratio though. Shouldn't be a problem as long as the car launches pretty straight. Just a little more work in the pits. On a track car it seems like a positive. I wouldn't want it on a driver though.

I'd also be for using P/S as quick, easy corrections may save a wrecked car at the expense of a few thousandths of a second per pass. As long as the car can run a tenth under the index there's probably no reason to skip the P/S.

then...

When she gets good enough that P/S heat and so on is varying her e.t. by a hundredth or two you can put the manual box on.

I recently switched from the power steering no the S-10 manual box with the G-Body pitman arm...I have skinnies up front so it's not that bad. I notice the difference though. If it's not gonna be a daily driver go with the manual steering..... 8)

Manual steering it's good for the forearms. 😀 I have manual steering with a big block and skinnies .I had no issues turning until I put a spool in. That's when turning tight became a real problem.
