ive been away from g bodies for a little bit now( went to doing v8 s10's) long story short im back with a 84 olds cutlass, i bought it without a motor, got mine in now, and cant remember what wire is for the factory tach, is it green with a white strip on it?

Hey, Not sure if this helps, But The book I have for 1982-84 Malibu/El Camino`s show a white wire for the tach to the distributor

Tach wire is white.

Green with a white tracer is the coolant sensor I believe or idiot light for coolant.

it is white from the cluster but it does connect to a brown wire that goes thru the firewall grommet to the distributor. I have heard of white wires going to dristibutor but all the ones I have seen have been brown..

PontiacGP is correct...
I just installed an OEM tach in my Bonneville...the tach wire in the dash harness is white, but the wire going through the firewall to the Tach terminal on the distributor is brown.

And just as an FYI, cars without a tach option still had the tach wire from the distributor to the fuse panel block. But on the interior side of the fuse panel, they just left that space blank. No wire.

If you want to add a tach and do it nice and clean you can get a Metri-pak connector. I believe it was a 280 but am not positive. I just stole a portion of the wire with the connector attached from a parts car and installed it into my fuse panel. Soldered my tach wire to that and was in business.

kuruption109 had the wire with the filter for the tach for sale a little while ago, I don't know if he sold it or not tho
