Space Saver Spare

This type of inflate with a can spare first came on 1st generation Camaro convertibles but would have been at biggest an E 78 14 (7.35x14). The 117 is also a date code 11th day of 1977.

This is most likely an F body spare tire as stated above for a 1977 from the date codes. El Camino is also possible since spare tire room was limited. Would have to research that.

The first modern idea of a space saver spare that was inflated all the time came on 73 and 74 Nova hatchbacks.

"I had a 79 Malibu Classic many years back that came with the limited slip rear end and as such it had the stowaway spare and refillable inflator. (Should have kept them). I do recall the tire brand used being Uniroyal as that was who GM was supplied tires from at the time."

That answers something I always wondered about and makes perfect sense. The donut spare would be wearing the posi the whole time it was installed. Therefore if the car doesn't have room for a proper diameter spare no posi was available like the 73-74 nova hatchback.

Had a good friend that was a parts counter guy that gave me the tip on 78 and up A /G body GM's to look for the stowaway spare and inflator. You always would find the "Limited Slip Lube Only" tag on the rear end. I believe in 83 with the 15inch wheels on the Monte Carlo SS, 442's and Grand Nationals GM used the larger size donut spare.
My 86 El Camino came with a full size spare due to having the Limited Slip.
