I'm trying to disconnect the cable at the joint located at the brake booster. There is no way to separate the knurled hub from the large nut. I'm trying to remove the cluster and can't get enough slack behind to slide the locking clip out.

the cluster doesn't pull out far but it's enough for me to slide my hand in to depress the tab on the clip to get the cluster out. The clip isn't removed

I can't visualize how to manipulate the slider clip. There also is a wire connector beside it. I'm going to try and lubricate the speed cable at the grommet and get more slack. Judging by the damaged plastic parts around the cluster area obviously it's been serviced before.

You may also be able to access it by removing the vent duct in the upper left corner (under the front bezel) and reach in from there.

Maybe you could unhook it from the trans to gain the needed slack?

It's not as slider clip, you just push down on the tab towards the cluster and that will release the cable. Do you have the body off the frame a few inches with the speedo cable attached to the transmission?

Body is on the frame. I'll try the suggestions to gain slack and I hope I don't break stuff like the previous monkey(s) tried to do.

Ed,
Below is a picture of the speedo from my 86 El Camino. The circled area is the release portion of the clip. As pontiacgp posted, depress the tang at the bottom and the cable should...should come free. I had to wiggle the cable housing a little to clear the clip.

Hope this helps

that's a great picture, I was looking for one but I couldn't seem to find one....

Thanks..almost came out by itself. I pulled the cable at the cowl and gave it more slack to get my fingers in there. Removing the duct really helped. The picture is

I've been described as having a wealth of "Useless Information"!
Just happy that once in a while something I recommend is Useful !!😀
