I recently bought a 78 Regal and while driving it home I realized that the speedometer wasn't working at all. So the following Monday I removed the speedometer to see was the cable turning inside the tubing and it wasn't. So after a trip to Auto Zone and 10-20 minutes later I had the new inner cable cut, crimped, and installed. I drove it without the speedometer to see was it spinning now and it WAS. So I put in the speedometer back in and nothing happens...WTF? So after I few more days of troubleshooting, trial and error I'm close to giving up. But I want to have it fixed by time the paperwork comes in so I can use it as my daily driver. But I refuse to drive it without a speedometer cause getting pulled over at the age of 17 and the excuse my speedometer doesn't work just don't cut it. And 1 more ticket and my license revoked so if you have any input please help so I can get my car back on the road and move onto working on another part of the car.

Can you use the end of your old cable in a drill to spin the speedo?

I took the end of one my screw drivers and did a few quick wrist turns don't if it helps or not but it jumped to between 5 and 10 my drill no longer works so that's all I could do

I drove my first 2 years without a speedometer I just used the tachometer. Kinda sounds like theres an issue in the speedometer since the cable spins but the gauge wont.

I'm thinking its the speedometer too...but I'm gonna buy a tach so I might as well buy a speedometer too and see if that solves the problem. I just wanted hear to hear a little input before I bought and aftermarket speedometer.

I may be selling a tach in the next week or so. I will PM you with details.

If you want something that will do the job for just under $100 you can get this GPS heads up display for your speedometer.
It looks pretty cool regardless.

I like that a lot. I'm considering getting this seeing as my speedo is way out of whack.

I never could find the right end formatted cable for my Regal....I have the 2 piece with short 20" side that connects to the speedo.....after so much trail error I went on my local craigslist typed in gps and found a new magellan with updates used twice for $45(the older lady got a new Volvo with it built in) so now I'm kewl with the window mounted gps telling me how fast I'm going....worked great for me on the Hot Power Tour this year......I run this until lucky and find the right cable in junkyard.
