Stalling Any Suggestions?

Hey guys got a slight problem with the cutlass here lately.
When I brake hard and come to a stop hard my car wants to stall out.
First it sputters and smoke comes out the tail pipe then stalls out.
It starts right back up and smokes like hell for a bit but then it goes away.
The problem is only during hard stops or hard turns.
Obviously I'm not trying to stop hard but when a light changes, someone pulls out in front of my it happens.

My thought was float is set too high cause you can smell gas when it happens but that's about all I can think of.
Any suggestions?

Could be too high but if it hasn't been apart, more likely a heavy float, either fuel soaked or leaking.
