It's been sitting for a while, but when I get it running, and try to put it into gear to move it, it just dies. And not like stumbles and shakes when stalling, but like getting no spark, or no gas type of a stall. The transmission is slipping, and probably needs to be rebuilt. There is a CEL. That says that the prom is installed incorrectly, but when I pulled it out, some of the pins were bent. I straightened them and reinstalled it, and it still says the same thing.

Any help would be appriciated, thanks

does it have a lock-up converter in it?
if it does, i would suspect that the converter is prematurely locking, or it is locked all the time.

This happened to me, it was really pissing me off after I got the engine and trans in my car. I fixed mine by getting the timing perfect and too much ATF in the trans. There's multiple reasons for it stalling in gear. here's a good brainstorming thread to get some ideas:

It's not a lock up problem. There is no shutter when put into gear. Just straight dies. Like a no fuel condition, or no spark condition, but in neutral. At this point, I don't even know if there really is that much fluid in there. The motor is the only thing that has been rebuilt. I did this about a year prior to parking it. The trans and converter are origninal. Never been out of the car. But this problem developed only recently.

hold the rpm's at about 800-1000 and go into gear. if it's a carb/timing tune issue that should keep it from stalling. if that doesn't change things, pull the lockup plug, just in case, and check that there are no wires near the column that may be getting moved.
how is the ATF level?
get a second person and a timing light. see if the timing changes when you go into gear. also see if you lose spark when you shift, preferrably using an inline spark tester so you don't have a dead plug.

Yeah, I tried to shift with my foot on the gas, and still, it stalls. No matter what RPMs the engine is at. I've also disconnected all of the electrical connectors (smog pump, IAC, TVS ect.) and still the same thing happens.

does it matter if you start it in park vs neutral? and then shift?
as of now, i'm thinking it's a wiring problem, probably in the steering column. when you shift, it's jogging the wires, causing them to lose connection. hook a DVOM into the coil power supply and see if it loses voltage when you shift.

Megaldon beat me to it. thats what it sounds like because the transmission is "dumb" and the engine only reacts to load.disconnect the linkage @ the transmission and cycle the shifter while its running. I had a camaro with a tilt wheel that if I pulled hard to the side it would kill the car.

now that you say that, it could very well be a tilt column problem, is your very loose and worn out?
