There's always something,
My 85' 442
When trying to start it, it turns and turns, When it does turn on it's idled very low and just ends up cutting off, it smokes up the garage with alot of exhaust fumes, It only turns on when I leave my foot down on the gas and turn it.

Is this something that just randomly started happening or have there been some recent repairs done, and now its doing this :?:

Sounds like its flooding, severly

What was the last thing you did to the car? I'd say back track from there...unless it's something that just began happening.
I agree with Ritter, sounds like an overly rich condition. High or stuck float, choke sticking. Does it still have the original carb. on there?

Yes, it has the quad,
Well what happened was it was doing this for a while and it was also idleing low on cold starts in the winter so I replaced the choke thermostat, I've adjusted it a few time but still doing the same,
Way back 3yrs ago when I bought the car it would only take 1 pump of the accelerator for it turn turn on.
Now it's crazy.

also sounds like the carb adjustments, especially idle speed, are out. do a complete carb tune and see what happens

A Quadrajet carburetor is not a very good carburetor to learn the ropes on (fact is you have one so its what you have to work with) I would suggest purchasing a "How to Rebuild and Modify Rochester Quadrajet Carburetors" NAPA part # 799-3218 and study this book. A Quadrajet is completely different than your off the shelf Edelbrock carburetor. They are a better carburetor because of all the fine tuning. This is also frowned upon by most car enthusiast because of the complexity

Me being one of those that frowns upon them. I guess the best reason for me is that I just don't have enough interest in them to learn how to master one 😳
