get a repair manual for the car, it will have a carb section
 
for someone not familiar with cars, yes haynes is the best. for the mechanically inclined, chiltons is usually preffered
 
You may not be getting a very good spark. If the car is hard to start and just turns over. You could be washing it down with gas. Is it an HEI distributor? You may want to look into a street fire distributor. If you get fuel from the accelerator pump when you hit the throttle then you have fuel. Just something else to check into. It will act rich if you aren't getting a good spark, meaning you are not burning all the fuel that you are supplying to the car. My two cents! Good luck.
