im new to the forum and im hoping im posting in the right section

i have a 88 monte ss with the factory 305 HO motor in it i recently changed out the starter because the solenoid was going bad due to the heat from the headers. i installed a summit racing mini high torque starter and it worked fine started up every time until i let the car sit for about a hour, it wouldn't start back up, or click. lucky enough i ended up getting it started and got home. i called summit and exchanged the starter for a new one thinking that starter was no good. when i put in the second new starter i cleaned all the connections and put in a 2 gauge power cable from the battery as well as had my battery tested (battery is good). it started up first time no problem i let the car sit with the battery connected and the same thing happens but now i at least get a clicking from the starter. now here's my problem the starter gets extremely hot when the battery is connected and i cant figure out why. all my grounds are good i even grounded the nose of the starter to the block.

any ideas would be great

I used to have that problem and got stranded every time I stopped somewhere (to get gas) etc.. on a hot day the starter would just click' until it cooled down enough to start up again. I fixed the problem permanently by bypassing the starter solenoid and located it up on the wheel well away from the heat from the motor/headers. Here is the part
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-g1750. It was the only good idea from Ford which used this type of starter solenoid for years, thanks Ford!

at first i thought it was the heat from the motor and headers with the second new starter so i let it sit until the headers were cold as well as the oil pan and the starter was still extreamly hot it seems like its constantly got electrical current flowing through it. once the battery is hooked up for longer then lets say 2 hours the starter gets hot and stays hot and refuses to turn the motor over no matter how long i let the car sit and cool

sounds like the starter has a short...you can check it with a multimeter. You can use the multimeter to confirm that two points are not electrically connected and that a short circuit does not exist.

which post would i have to check?

there's a top one were the power connects a bottom one that connects the solenoid to the starter and a side one that i believe is for the ignition

you check the starter housing and the battery terminal on the starter, there should not be any continuity

thanks for the help i am going to try that out tonight if it stops raining

is there something im doing wrong when i install the starter that would cause this because it is the second new starter i have put in with the same problem

just got off the phone with summit racing they were more then happy to allow me to return the second starter and send me a new one but from a powermaster

hopefully this one will work with out any problems

im also thinking of putting a heat shield blanket on this starter because i have headers what do you guys think?

ill keep the thread updated

so I got my new powermaster starter yesterday and installed it last night started up no problem and turned it on and off a few times with no problems i drove it around all day today with out one problem turned out the summit racing starters (Summit Racing SUM-829000 - Summit Racing® Mini High-Torque Starters) were both no good i looked at there reviews and im not the only one it has happened to seems like its a common problem with them having shorts from the manufacturer

thanks for all the advice
