The starter on the cutlass I just bought from my parents sh*t the bed. I was wondering if it's better to just have the old starter rebuilt and put back on or is it ok to just go to a parts store and buy a new one because I can get a new one for cheaper than it costs to have the old one rebuilt. I've just always been told that it's better to use the old one but I don't know if there's any truth to that.

if you go to a good parts store and get a good quality rebuilt starter, you're good. if you go to autozone and get the cheap one, you'll have problems. same thing with rebuilding, if they're good...

The parts store replacements are not as good as factory, but the better ones are not too bad. I have had a parts store starter I found in a junkyard for $10 in my Olds for 12 years now with no issues. I generally like the lifetime warranty from Autozone because they keep the record in their system and can pull it up. No need to keep the receipt. Just don't get the cheapest one and you should do ok. At least with a lifetime starter, you will never again have to pay for one, even if it is a bit of a PITA to change it now and then. After all, nothing lasts forever. Heck, I had to replace the original starter in my Nissan and it only got 270,000 miles. I used Autozone for it, and have driven another 30k with no issues.

alot of salvage yards(in Minnesota anyway) have really good warranty's, in fact the last one I worked at there had 1 year warranty's and I believe a starter for that would have been like $15 or $20, look around

Definately go with the lifetime warranty. I did that with my front wheel bearings on my Grand Prix and it has saved me so much money. It sucks that they are really cheap and seem to go bad every 15-20,000 miles but oh well at least they are free! One of these days I probably will go with one from AC Delco and maybe get alot more life out of it.
