What is the difference between the steering boxes in my cars? Both of my 79's the cutlass and the el camino have gear boxes with 4 bolts on the tops. The one in the 83 cutlass is round with no bolts on the top.
The 4-bolt box is an 800 series unit which is considered a stronger unit. The round top unit is a 605 series unit which I feel is an inferior unit. However, they are used for power steering conversion in Tri-five Chevys. Go figure.
The 800 series has a tighter feel than the round box. The boxes pitman arms ARE different so if you swap make sure you get the right arm from the donors, or you'll be buying a 70 arm on eBay 🙁
