Good morning guys…is it possible to put a 87 s10 column in my 86 cutlass……thxz for the information

I think the biggest issue you would have is the plate that bolts to the fire wall, where it is on the column housing length wise and the size and shape and where the bolt holes to the fire wall are.

Where are you located? Asking because there are replacement columns that can be found. I might have access to to several lol.

If the mounting plate at the base is the only thing different, you can take a large tubing cutter or a chain cutter (that's what I used) and cut the plate off of the base of the column. If you look, there is a weld that goes around the column close to the base. Just use the cutter below the weld. Make sure that you don't go into the inner tube. Tap it off, install it on the new column. Bolt the new column in the vehicle. With it bolted up, I made a few small welds just to keep it in the correct position. Then I removed the column and fully welded it. If you can't weld it, mark it and have someone else weld it. That's how I installed a 93 Bravada tilt column in my 88 S-10. Even between the early and late S and T trucks the fire walls were different. I just went and looked at my 86 Cutlass. I don't know if all A/G bodies are the same between 78-88, but my weld is right at the point where the mounting plate flares out, about 3/4" lower than my S-10, but I think it would still be doable. Just experiment on the column you want to install or a different column.

The length of the lower tube that has the plate is also shorter. I have tried. This really needs 2 things to work in a G body;
Lengthening the lower tube and stretching the collapsible inner shaft to the proper length.
