Alright the steering gear box has been leaking for some time now and decided to remove it to have it rebuilt but am having trouble removing the pitman arm any ideas this thing is kicking my a$$. :blam:

use a puller

if you still have problems, try putting just a small amount of pressure with the puller, and hit the arm with a hammer a few times... re-tension and repeat

also some heat wouldnt hurt as well

Don't use heat if you can help it. You could melt the seals on the shaft. Tighten the puller and then strike the center screw of the puller with a BFH to loosen the arm. An impact gun is what you really need. They are a pain on the car.

I just did this job a couple weeks ago. I tried a typical flywheel puller on the pitman arm but it didn't budge and the puller kept slipping off. Finally, I went to Autozone and rented a real pitman arm puller and it then it came right off with no problem.

A put a replacement gear box on and now my steering wheel is at turned about 20 degrees where it should be. Is that normal? I guess I can have an alignment shop fix it.

well once i get it off should I just have it rebuilt or purchase a new one and what type do you guys recommend its going on a 1984 Hurst Olds just tired of it leaking time to replace but am skeptical about purchasing a re manufactured one
