Steering shaft up grade 1988 cherokee

not sure what the 88 shaft looks like but i would be safe and get one from a 90's jeep Cherokee...
 
I got one of the aluminum-ended ones and I'm currently looking into how I'm going to make it work for a '78 splined column.

So far, the opening of the non-splined side of the Jeep shaft measures about 5/8" inside diameter.

The splined '78 steering column shaft measures 15/16" outside diameter.

BIG difference! The steering column end in the car appears to have an inner sleeve to prevent crushing the splined collar when a pinch bolt is used.

Right now it's looking like a lot of material would need to be removed from both ends to make it work. To be continued....
