Steering wheel / telescopic?

If the car was previously converted to a manual transmission, then they hooked you up with that manual column. The typical route is to knock the pin out of the shift level and carry on. Some risk of the disaster I described above.

If you are tall, you can make adapter plates to move the seat mounts further back and just keep what you have.

If you want a tilt/manual column, you can scour the yards for a manual S10. The column is basically the same as a Gbody, but shorter, which would move the wheel away from you. You have to cut off the S10 floorboard mount plate and weld on the Gbody plate. Make lots of measurements so it's in the right place/orientation.

Thanks I guess I’ll live with what I have
I’m 5;9 so for my legs to reach the clutch etc comfortably I can’t move the seats back to much

But I do feel like I’m on top of the wheel

Oh ok I got it
Another option would be swap the steering wheel with one that is less dished than yours which would make the steering wheel closer to the dash.
If you need more leg room like ssn696 stated you can make adapter plates to move the seat rearward which is what I did in my Regal.

Good point about the steering wheel

I have Grant Signature Series in both my Gbody's but there are plenty of brands and styles out there and most require some sort of adapter to mount on a Gbody column but it is not very difficult to do but you will need a puller.
This is my Regal and I painted the Grant steering wheel to match the interior.

Is that one a telescopic?
I'm a little late on responding & others have already brought up that our cars never had a telescopic column & it's a standerd column for a manual shift car. Now, is there no issue with you turning the lock to all the positions (Accesory, Lock, Run, Start) with no need to depress the black lock out lever? All the manual shift columns I have can only go from Run to Lock with the lever pressed down.
