What the stock trans behind a v6 in an 81 malibu?

Most likely a TH200C. If "METRIC" is stamped on the pan, that's what it is.

POS boat anchor.

Yep, most likely a 200C if its a coupe or sedan. Wagons and Elkys got a 350C for '81, even with the V6. My '78 LeMans still has it's original TH200 that amazingly still shifts good. Last time I changed the fluid though I could literally scoop up black crud from the bottom of the pan with my finger, remains of the inner workings just grinding away. I'm awaiting the day it just spews parts out along the road, but at 60k miles and 30 years old it still works.

The 200 was never a good transmission but the 200s and 350s could run without fluid and grind half of themselves off and still run. Just like the rest of the G-Body, those things were so overbuilt that they can take the worst beatings and still run.
