heres the story. just traded for this car, i noticed the dipstick didnt sit all the way down in the tube when i first looked at it. i tried to push it down to get it to seal but it wouldnt. it was bottoming out on the pan bottom. well i didnt talk to the guy for awhile and then i decided i wanted the car. it still had the dipstick sticking out of the tube about an inch when he showed up. i drove the car. it shifted well and did everything it should. no puddles in the drive way and no problem (the kid drove it 2 hours one way and i drove it about 2 or 3 miles). well i got the car and i decided i was going to take it to the parts store about a mile or two through town, alot of stop and go driving. i get there and get my parts and notice transmission fluid all over under the car. i opened the hood and its all over around the dipstick tube, on the hvac box and firewall and its wet down the side of the transmission snd on to the headers but there wasnt any fluid on the hood. so i baught a new th350 dipstick and put it in. what i noticed (besides the fact that the new one required the removal of the factory seal), i noticed that the new one was about 2 inches shorter and so was the dipstick. after i installed the dipstick i started the car and warmed the transmission up and checked the fluid. it was barely touching at the bottom so i ended up putting in about 2 or 3 quarts of fluid after running through the gears and all that fun stuff in the drive way. Now for the question, now hat you know the story what do you guys think. i realize it shouldnt be pumping transmission fluid out the top of the tube but with the dipstick not sealing up and the tube that was in it being to long would that cause my issue? or do i need to start taking lines apart and checking for blockages in the lines and cooler?i have let the car idle for about 15 to 30 minutes but i didnt notice any leaking since there was still fluid dripping off the car. any help would be appreciated

If you had a extra long dipstick installed and it was filled accordingly it stands to reason there was to much fluid in the transmission hence the puking through the tube.

i was thinking with the longer dipstick bottoming out in the pan it would read lower fluid levels. or am i wrong?

You stated that the dipstick was sticking out of the tube, that to me would seem like the marks would be higher up in the tube.I wouldnt start taking any thing apart just yet, just the fact you didnt know the correct level in the trans and it puked out the tube to me would seem like it was overfilled.Keep an eye on it for awhile since you got the correct dipstick it more than likely was just overfilled

i also mentioned that the tube in the car was also about 2 inches longer then the new one i put in making both the tube and dipstick longer. but i totally agree with you when you say the level may have been off. i'm thinking i'm going to spray down the motor and transmission with engine de greaser and maybe run the car down the road for a while get the thing up to temp and see what happens. there isnt anything i can do to hurt the transmission anymore than it possibly has been already anyway

Yeah I would clean it off see if you can duplicate the problem,As long as you have fluid in it your not going to hurt the transmission.Just throw a couple extra quarts in the trunk for the what if.

well as of today it seems to be working fine so far. i sprayed degreaser on the motor, transmission, and firewall to wash of all the fluid and gunk on the motor. besides having the usual gm seal seeping it doesnt seem to be shooting fluid all over which is good. i'm just going to keep watching it and see what happens. thanks for the help. lol now i just have to figure out how to get my headers to seal up. they have new gaskets and i still cant get #8 to seal up. it looks to me like its leaking between the flange and the pipe. i thaught about welding it but i'm not sure how much its going to warp the flange. not that they arent warped already haha
