...until you try to turn a corner, then things get iffy. 😉
I'd still rather have a Turbo 3.8 than the VQ35DE, though...oil consumption on the newer Nissan motors is retarded. The VQ45DE is notorious in some circles for consuming an entire quart in a single oil change cycle.
..depends on your driving style. i prefer RWDs for that sh*t. i like having the power at the rear when drifting. except for on ice, i do better behind a rwd than a fwd. not much, but better. people say you can't corner in a muscle car, and that there is a load. you have to learn to drive with the throttle, not just the E-brake. every car made before the late 80s didn't have traction control, and most were RWD and everone did just fine, no matter the type of driving. saying a car handles like crap because of it's powertrain orientation is crap.
As far as boosting the 350Z, supercharging is not the best route. The guys making the most power run turbos, and it seems like one big turbo is better than twin turbo. The turbo Z's are faster than supercharged ones even if they're about the same "Peak" hp. Most of the Z turbo setups I've seen are roughly 450HP at the wheels with a stock 3.5L engine and a turbo kit with intercooler. Those guys run in the 11 second range at the drag strip.
It's not just peak HP number that counts, it's how quickly it starts making HP and when it starts to drop off again. The supercharger makes low rpm HP and torque but only for a short rpm range. Turbo starts off a little slow and then makes big HP the higher the RPM. Combine that with an automatic in the GN and you can powerbrake it to get the turbo spooled up and ready for launch. That's why the Z pulled away from the GN for a second and then ran out of steam, but the GN still was making more and more power.
