Hey, been surfing the board for a couple years, but never posted anything.

I have an '86 Cutlass Supreme that I dropped a 383sbc with a 700R4 in to. Headers are apparently difficult to find. Every manufacturer I ask immediately say they don't make headers for the Supreme. Is this just a myth? I don't see how regular Cutlass headers wouldn't work.

I'm looking for full-length with 3" collectors.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Are you using stock mounts for a g body?
If so any headers for a gbody w/ SB chevy should work.

I have a cutlass supreme with headers, but im running an olds motor.

do you have a prefered brand of headers?

Yup, I'm using the stock motor mounts (upgraded to polyurethane). It came originally with a 305sbc (Canadian car).

I don't have a preffered brand really, I'm not looking for a ceramic coating or stainless.

Its a myth. Supposedly the Supreme models have the engine mounted offset and it is different than all other G bodies.

heres a link to jegs, and it should pull up a search that cued to cutlass headers, be sure to read the descriptions for what years and motors.

http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/s ... atchallany

I was bored so i got the link, otherwise just search performance companies.

Also check the forum(post it in the wanted section), ebay and craigslist, you never know what youl find.

I got my headman headers from ebay for less then 75.00 shipped,They where never used but laying around (but no rust), the guy only listed what motor they fit, not what car. so nobody was bidding. I took the time to look up the part number for them, and low and behold they were what i needed.
Just goes to show, you never know what you might find.

It's the myth that won't die. It started with the A-body cars and Olds motors. Apparently it has now progressed to G-body cars and even to crossmembers (!?)

It's a total crock. The G-body Supreme uses EXACTLY the same frame as every other G-body (except the Camino). Even when using an Olds motor, headers fit just fine.

Someone needs to tell the people who make the mail order magazines that

I have a set of Flowtech headers in my 82 with a chevy 350. They fit nice up top but hit the transmission housing.... I had to dent one tube a bit and shave off a little bit from the transmission ear. I had to re-invent the shifter linkage, I am currently using a column shift, upgrading to a floor shift as we speak.

Have you ever tried stacking up the exhaust gaskets on the head?
It will bring the header away from the engine and trans. depending on how bad the header hits, you might get the room needed.
But make sure you use some heavy duty gaskets, like all copper, or aluminum gaskets
Im running a set of embosed solid copper gaskets, they work great, and if the header comes loose or you have to take it off, you can reuse them. I have been running them for a few months and have not had a problem with them.

I am running a set of hedman headers, they fit almost perfect, a little tight to the frame in spots, but that will only be a problem if a motor mount fails, I also have a colum shifter which i am keeping, and the linkage has plenty of room. (but i am running an olds motor)

(off point but...) Has anyone that has clearence issues ever told this to the header manufacturers, they might be able to fix it, and get rid of the problem in there headers that are being made. They might even be willing to swap your old headers for new ones (I have had companies do this for me on various parts over the years. If they care about there products, they wont want ppl to be unhappy. and if they dont care, I wouldnt want there products)

The Flowtechs are dropped below the gear selector pretty well, just not enough to allow the gear selector to move fully thru the gears. It would barly get into drive, so I cut it 2x and rewelded it. It works pretty good with out a gear indicator on the dash. I filed down the mounting surface and got some more clearence but its still tight. I thought of the double gaskets but had issues in the past with double gaskets.
